**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Washington, Neah Bay, Makah tribe, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden canoe modeled after the traditional Makah whaling canoe. The vessel has a protruding bow that resembles a deer head, trim painted in bright red pigment, and white diagonal bands that are adorned with two petite orca whales. The interior has four wide seats, a trio of slender thwarts for crosswise stabilization, and a rectangular box body on one of the seats. Included is a whittled wooden paddle with a T-shaped grip and a petaloid blade. The underside of the canoe would be tapered for a full-size vessel but has been planed flat for display purposes. The word "Makah" is written in white paint on the front above one whale image. Size: 18" L x 3.1" W x 2.55" H (45.7 cm x 7.9 cm x 6.5 cm)

Signed "Makah" on one side. Light wear on surface commensurate with age including some loss to the outer lacquer on the underside, but otherwise in very fine condition.
