Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $150**

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A hand-built earthenware olla of a graceful form and an extensive decorative/iconographic program embellished with wonderful incised and bas relief details as well as bat and monkey reliefs. The brownware vessel also has double perforations for suspension. A special vessel, replete with impressive artistry as well as meaningful iconography. Nocturnal bats - the only winged mammals that fly - were believed to be as ominous as owls among Pre-Columbian cultures. Swooping and darting in the night sky, these creatures were linked to both the underworld and sexual potency, the sexual connotations in turn were associated with rain and fertility. Size: 6" L x 5.3" W x 3.4" H (15.2 cm x 13.5 cm x 8.6 cm)

Monkeys in ancient Costa Rican art were probably modeled on the native spider monkey. Known for being inquisitive and chattering. In addition to being entertaining creatures, they are also often associated with creation myths both in Central America and in the Mayan world, suggesting an almost evolutionary understanding of the monkey / human relationship. Various myths recount earlier worlds inhabited by monkeys rather than humans that were destroyed by cataclysms, making monkeys by extrapolation, proto-humans. What's more, monkeys were often associated with writing and art, perhaps because of their observed intelligence.

Provenance: ex-William and Carol Thibadeau Sr., acquired in the 1970s to 1980s; ex-Tom Francis Collection, Gainesville, Georgia, USA, acquired by descent to children
