Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Chiriqui culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel in the form of a traditional grinding platform called a metate. The quadruped container is raised atop 4 protruding, tab-shaped legs and displays incised linear motifs around the walls. The expressive feline head exhibits thick lips and bared fangs, bulging eyes, a perky snout, and tab-shaped ears flanking incised concentric lines atop the brow; a slender tail curves off the verso. Size: 7.2" L x 4.3" W x 2.6" H (18.3 cm x 10.9 cm x 6.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition
Repaired with restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Nicks and abrasions, with softening to some original finer details on body and jaguar head, and light earthen deposits within some recessed areas. Nice preservation to jaguar head. Old inventory labels and old handwritten inventory number beneath base of body.
