Alex Breede (Maine, New York, Latvian 1892-1972)
Born in Latvia, Breede was a mariner and sailor prior to World War I, eventually serving on several U.S. transport ships during the War allowing him to become a U.S. citizen. Following the war, Breede came to New York where he studied with Guy Pene Dubois and Warren Shephard, living and exhibiting in New York until the 1930s. After spending summers on Monhegan Island and Pemaquid Point, Breede moved to Pemaquid Point where he established Surf Echo Studio. Known as a meticulous and detailed marine artist best known for his paintings of sailing ships (he was also an accomplished coastal landscape artist), Breede lived and worked in Maine until his death in 1972.
