Description
A Japanese hanging scroll 'The Death of Buddha', Edo period 1600 - 1868, depicting the death of Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha who is lying on a dais with lotus pillow below tall trees, surrounded by mourning bodhisattvas, disciples and various animals, with Sakyamuni's mother Maya descending on a cloud, with chased copper jitu, watercolour, gouache and gold leaf, 133 x 77.5 cm
Condition
Some staining to the upper quarter and some small creases throughout, but in principal the image is in relatively good condition. The colours are vibrant. The upper border is very stained. The middle border is torn and very distressed with some losses. the left side border has come away from the image. Some tears to lower middle border and a small tear to the right side of the lower border.
