Item Details
Description
This is a bronze rendition of Roman mythological god Mercury. Mercury is seen seated among the billows of clouds hurriedly preparing himself for his celestial duty. The beholder witnesses him tying his divine gear to complete his charge of delivering messages from the gods, in swift flights, to and fro from earth and to the heavens. He wears the typical talaria which are winged sandals, made by the god Haphaestus, made of imperishable gold in which allows the god to fly as prompt as any bird. A petasos crowns his head which is a sun hat of Thessalian origin worn by the ancient Greeks. As a winged hat, it became the symbol of Mercury or his Greek correlative god, Hermes. Mercury is also considered the god of commerce, cunning, and invention. He was cast using the ancient method of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish for perpetuation. The sculpture is mounted upon a black marble base with the artist Giambologna's signature.Giambologna, born as Jean Boulogne, incorrectly known as Giovanni da Bologna and Giovanni Bologna (1529 – 13 August 1608), was a sculptor, known for his marble and bronze statuary in a late Renaissance or Mannerist style.  Giambologna was born in Douai, Flanders (now in France). After youthful studies in Antwerp with the architect-sculptor Jacques du Broeucq,he moved to Italy in 1550, and studied in Rome. Giambologna made detailed study of the sculpture of classical antiquity. He was also much influenced by Michelangelo, but developed his own Mannerist style, with perhaps less emphasis on emotion and more emphasis on refined surfaces, cool elegance and beauty.
