Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze statue of the god Mercury. He wears his distinctive winged helmet as he stands, holding a tortoise (one of his symbols) in an outstretched hand. Mercury, the god of commerce, poetry, and travelers, guided Roman souls to the underworld. This would have been a votive figure, perhaps made to be kept in a wealthy home and prayed to, deposited in a temple as an offering, or kept for ritual with other metallic objects by priests. Size: 2.25" W x 4.1" H (5.7 cm x 10.4 cm); 4.45" H (11.3 cm) on included custom stand.
