Description
Second half 19th century, 53 x 114 cm, South East Caucasus, Moghan region
A side panel of a Shahsavan mafrash woven in the sumakh technique, probably by one of the tribal groups in the Moghan-Savalan region. The design of three wide horizontal bands used to extend around all four sides of this large cargo or storage bag. In the white-ground central band, four flat, alternately dark blue and light red octagons are separated by abstract green trees. The two red-ground bands each contain six stylised animals which may represent peacocks. - Obvious signs of age and wear, moth damage, old repairs, damaged right-hand edge.
