Description
Colonial America
Historic Reprint From Paul Revere's Original Copper-Plate Engraved c. 1762 "His Majesty's North-Battery, in Boston"
c. 1762 French and Indian War Colonial Era, Paul Revere Engraved "His Majesty's North-Battery, in Boston," Reprint Struck off the Original Copper-Plate Engraved by Paul Revere, Choice Crisp Near Mint.
This was one of Paul Revere's earliest Engravings, the original Copper Plate which was estimated to have been engraved about 1762. This early reprint, likely from the 1880s, was produced off that original Copper Plate. It is printed on heavy wove paper having a crisp, clear impression taken directly from the plate, the outer outline of which is quite visible thanks to the pressure exerted by the press when this print was created. The actual size of the Engraving measures 5.75" x 7.75" with wide outer margins bringing it to 9.5" x 10." This was one of Paul Revere's first engravings and has his name is seen printed in text to the bottom right under the top vignette reading, "P Revere Sculp(tor)."

This was used as a Certificate Form to be filled out and completed by those enlisting to become part of this artillery command. Only one original example completed Certificate is known to exist (as shown on page 14 of "Paul Revere's Engravings" by Clarence S. Brigham, 1954). That original currently resides in the collection of the Massachusetts Historical Society. From 1877 to 1903, various impressions were taken from the plate -- it is unclear which impression this is. However, all were made in strict limited editions and they are quite rare today -- certainly, we have never handled an original example and this is as close a representative one can obtain. Considering the unique nature and incredible value of the original, this is an affordable example, enjoying a direct connection to the original plate and Paul Reverse himself. Signed, "P Revere Sculp" as in the original plate. There is a virtually invisible sealed 1" marginal tear at upper right selvage away from the plate which could be easily covered by a mat and frame. An outstanding item, certainly worthy of serious collectors of historic Colonial Prints and Paul Revere related items. Overall, a wonderful sharply printed print with excellent eye appeal for display.
