Description
Bamana, Mali, Antelope dance mask, Tjiwara Society dance mask carved in two parts. Wood with the finest relief carving on the head and body of the antelope, the horns in extremely fine relief. The horizontal long ears are pierced and decorated with cotton threads. Metal nails emphasize both the eyes of the antelope and that of the figure. Dark brown, finest, slightly shiny patina. Wood, metal, textile, glass beads. H. 43 cm; L. 51 cm., Provenance: ex. Hans Schneckenburger collection; ex Kaiser collection 1975.
Condition
Slight losses on the cross connection between the front and rear legs. Minimal abrasion on the nostrils. A metal fitting on the left foot of the figure is missing. Rubbing on both tips of the horns, the right ear with rubbing and breaking points.
