Description
1853 1ed Slavery Underground Railroad Isaac Hopper Maria Child Quaker Abolition

‘Isaac T Hopper’ is Lydia Maria Child’s biography of her friend and noted abolitionist Isaac Hopper. Isaac Hopper was active in Philadelphia in the anti-slavery movement and in prison reform throughout the Northwest.

Child’s book carefully wove together Hopper's abolitionist activities with sections that scholars feel were influenced by Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery work. Many Quakers of that time wanted to delay or slowly attack slavery since they saw that it could bring about an end to the United States as a nation. Child argues that those Quakers in business were blinded by their need for cotton and ‘Isaac Hopper’ became a major work in influencing those who called for the end of slavery.
