Description
This lot consists of an unframed acrylic painting on canvas board, done in the style of Emmanuel Mane-Katz (Litvak-Ukrainian, 1894-1962). Hand-painted inscription at lower left reads, "Mane-Katz". This compelling image depicts a throng of Jewish men, led by a holy man. The entire scene is full of color and visceral emotion. A striking addition to any collection, this piece measures approximately 9.75" x 13.75".
Emmanuel Mane-Katz (Litvak-Ukrainian, 1894-1962) was a painter known for his depictions of Eastern Europe's Jewish shtetl. At the age of 19, Mane-Katz moved to Paris to study art. Though the outbreak of World War II drove Mane-Katz away from his beloved Paris for some time, he was eventually able to return and was eventually awarded a gold medal at the 1931 Paris World's Fair for his stunning work, "The Wailing Wall".
