This lot consists of an acrylic painting on paper, done in the gestural abstract style of Hans Hartung (German-French, 1904-1989). This striking image is a burst of translucent yellow against a background of haunting jet black. A subtle handwritten inscription in white paint at lower left reads, "Hartung". This unframed, modern piece measures approximately 11.75" x 8".

Reverse side of piece features a stamp which bears the name of the "Galleria la Polena" of Genova, Italy.

Hans Hartung (German-French, 1904-1989) is best known for his contributions to the world of modern art. Hartung was born in Leipzig, where he studied art history and philosophy before pursuing an education in fine art. Hartung eventually moved to Paris and carefully studied the works of the old masters. He endured imprisonment and mistreatment at the hands of the Gestapo during the Second World War, and spent the duration of his career engrossed in the "freewheeling" abstraction for which he is so well known.
