Description
This lot consists of a gouache, graphite, paper, and colored pencil collage, done in the Cubist style of Henri Laurens (French, 1885-1954). Image depicts a geometric arrangement of a deconstructed instrument. The viewer is able to make out wood textures, pegs, and lines that suggest strings and a soundhole. "Laurens 1918" is written by hand in colored pencil at lower right corner. A fine addition to any collection of modern art, this unframed piece measures approximately 8.75" x 8".
Reverse side of piece features four stamps and a handwritten inscription. One stamp reads, "Darius Talyarken. 31 Pont Street. London SW1." The next stamp reads, "Galerie Georges Giroux". A third stamp reads, "R. Savignat. La Souterraine." The fourth stamp is largely illegible to this author, but can be seen at lower right corner. Handwritten inscription (which appears to be a catalogue number) reads, "H[?]574.B".
Henri Laurens (French, 1885-1954) was a pre-eminent contributor to the beginnings of Cubism in Europe. He was greatly influenced by his contemporaries Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, and Juan Gris. In addition to being a gifted painter, Laurens was also a poster artist, collage artist, engraver, and theatrical designer.
