Description
This unique lot consists of a two-sided oil painting on unstretched canvas. On one side, we see a still life scene with classical subject matter: a marble bust, a pitcher, some fruit, and an elegantly draped swath of fabric. The word "Ensor" is hand painted at lower right corner.
On the reverse, we see a striking portrait of a woman in shades of lemon and tangerine. She gazes solemnly to her left, a stark contrast to her bright and buoyant attire.
Overall, this canvas measures approximately 18" x 13.5".
James Sidney Ensor (Belgian, 1860-1949) was a realistic painter and printmaker, whose particular interest lay in expressionism and surrealism. He was often drawn to subject matter like carnivals, puppetry, skeletons, and masks, with an uncanny ability to depict light, emotion, and the human condition.
