Joan Mitchell (American, 1925-1992) was one of the few female artists of her era to gain regard from both the public and critics alike. Mitchell's career in art took her from her birthplace, Detroit, to New York, Paris, and back again. She was not only a groundbreaking painter, but a printmaker as well. Some of Joan Mitchell's closest colleagues and friends were the likes of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Helen Frankenthaler. Together, they actively conceived what we now consider the "second generation" of American Abstract Expressionism. Works by Joan Mitchell are held in public collections across the U.S. and Europe, including her beloved France.
