Central Asia, India, Gupta Dynasty, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A handsome redware bull with a tiered headdress. This is Nandi, the gate-guardian of Kailasa, where Lord Shiva lives. He is also Shiva's mount. He is often depicted with a human body and a bull head, as here. This example has nicely incised details and is sculpted to have a cylindrical shaft horizontally through its shoulders. An early Hindu representation with fine details! Size: 2.95" W x 4.45" H (7.5 cm x 11.3 cm); 6.35" H (16.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.; ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired in the 1950s

Chips and nicks on surface, notably on one ear and the back of the head. Deposits on surface. Nice remaining detail, especially on the headdress.
