Description
[Philadelphia & Pennsylvania] [Penn, William] Land Grant. Philadelphia: April 10, 1684. 1pp. Manuscript document in secretarial hand to recto of one sheet of paper. Signed \"Wm Penn\". Document and signature presumably a contemporary copy. Document grants ownership of a 1,000-acre lot of land to William Frampton, who requested the grant to accompany the deed of sale transferred to him by the lot\'s previous owner, John Brincklow. Four tears at old folds traversing the document, with evidence of old tape repairs to verso, some uneven toning. Contents and signature clear and dark. Window mounted and framed with a portrait of Penn and descriptive plaque. Unexamined out of frame.William Penn (1644-1718), born in London, England, was the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, and an early member of the Religious Society of Friends--or, the Quakers. Under Penn\'s supervision, the city of Philadelphia and its surrounding areas were planned and developed. In an effort to draw wealthy settlers to the area, Penn offered the best plots of land to those who were willing to purchase several thousand acres at a time.
