ink drawing, watercolor/paper, mat window 36 x 27 cm, signed bottom right V Hala 1940, mount, glass, framed Jan Hala is a 20th Century Slovak painter and illustrator, born in 1890 in Blatna, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovakia.
First, he studied at the F. Engelmüller's private school of painting in Prague and, from 1910 to 1915, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (under professor Bukovac and Pirner). In the 1960's, he lived in the Tatra Mountains and was artistically influenced by the locals, their folklore and landscape. In 1925, he became a member of the Slovak Artists Association.
