Description
1864 Civil War General Benjamin Butler New Orleans American Gulf Illustrated MAP
A rare Civil War-era printing of James Parton’s biographical sketch on the life of General Benjamin Butler. Known as ‘Beast’, Benjamin Butler was a major general in the Union army who is best remembered for directing the first Union expedition to the Gulf Coast. This command included the capture of New Orleans and various battles in the American south. Parton’s book was written with exclusive access to Butlers documents immediately after he came home from New Orleans. Hearn points out,
“the book provided man valuable insights into the general’s personality and suspiciously included material one would have expected to find in the missing official documents.”
This 1864 edition gives a history of Butlers career in civil and military life, and then focuses on the administration of Butler in New Orleans during his eight months in 1862 as Department Commander. This edition contains 4 full page illustrations including a map of Fort Jackson on the Mississippi River.
