Description
1868 Civil War 1ed Benjamin Butler American Cyclops Union Army Volck ART

‘The American Cyclops’ by James Fairfax McLaughlin is a satirical story on the life of notorious Union army general Benjamin Butler. Known as ‘Beast’, Butler is best remembered for directing the first Union expedition to the Gulf Coast. This command included the capture of New Orleans and various battles in the American south. He was disliked in the South much in part to his ideas of freeing fugitive slaves.

This 1868 first edition features the artwork of Adalbert John Volck, a German-immigrant to America who is best known for his caricature sketches, the ‘Confederate War Etchings’ – famed pro-South propaganda.
