Envelope addressed: Miss Mary E. Duncan Galena ILL. ALS: “Asheville Ten. Feb.,15th 1864 Miss Mary Duncan, Your letter to me and one to Mrs. Grant enclosing photograph were received. Mrs. G is in St. Louis and very much afflicted with her eyes. I forwarded your letter to her Thurs.- I was very glad to hear from you and ever shall be. I have to much to do however to write long letters so you must excuse me.- After the war I hope to make a long visit to Galena and to visit all my old friends there again. My best regards to all your family and to other friends in Galena. Yours truly U. S. Grant Maj. Gen. USA.” Framed in double sided glass displaying the front of letter and verso of the signature, the front of the envelope is displayed and held in place with clear corner tabs. The letter is between two pieces of blue matt board, under glass in simple black painted wood frame, wires for hanging on signature side. Paper has visible creases from folding. Written in brown ink, the writing is very legible and the overall tone is friendly and personal. The envelope is address in similar ink but darker in color. Black ink postmark stamp upper right with faded three cent stamp with profile facing left of George Washington. Sight size of letter is 7.5 x 4.5, verso of signature area 1.75 x 4.5. Envelope measures 3.25 x 5. Overall in frame 16.5 x 10. Condition: Envelope has frayed left edge, tear at lower left and several small perforations. Neither letter or envelope inspected out of the framing. Frame with minor scuffs.
