Item Details
Description
"A Brief Enquiry Into the True Nature and Character of Our Federal Government: Being a Review of Judge Story's Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States", "The Abolition conspiracy to destroy the union, or, A ten years' record of the "Republican" party" and "The Negros Place in Nature: a paper read before the London Anthropological Society". Philadelphia: John Campbell, 1863. 12 mo. Hardbound in dark blue buckram boards with leather spine (missing title insert). Heads, tail and corners bumped/chipped with losses, rule edges, 131 numbered pages. Bound with two anti-abolitionist tracts including "The Abolition conspiracy to destroy the union, or, A ten years' record of the " Republican" party" and "The Negros Place in Nature: a paper read before the London Anthropological Society" by Dr. James Hunt, 1864. This paper "The Negro's place in nature" was greeted with boos and hisses when given at the British Association meeting in 1863 because of its defense of slavery in the Confederate States of America and belief in the plurality of the human species. Upshur was a Virginia State Rights jurist who succeeded Daniel Webster as President Tyler's Secretary of State. He was killed in 1844 on board the battleship Princeton when it exploded. In 1840, the first edition of this piece issued from Petersburg, Virginia. Suspicious of majoritarianism and Jacksonian democracy, Upshur repudiated the Declaration of Independence and the doctrine of Natural Law. This work "was reprinted in 1863 as a means of setting forth the political philosophy of the Confederacy." DAB. Howes U24. Swem 5856. II Harv. Law Cat. 827. Bartlett 5485.
