Description
1856 1ed Great Iron Wheel South Slavery Brownlow Baptist Methodist American
William Gannaway Brownlow was an American politician and Methodist Preacher. He was Tennessee’s first reconstruction era republican governor and was an expert in provoking bitter conflicts both with his Presbyterian and Baptist rivals as well as his political rivals. Even though he supported slavery, Brownlow opposed secession and was imprisoned by the Confederacy for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the southern government. Brownlow’s book ‘The Great Iron Wheel Examined’ is his personal attack on James Robinson Graves, a noted Baptist Preacher of the day, in which Brownlow defends slavery, argues against secession, and belittles Baptists and other denominations and people.
