East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built ceramic jar decorated with a complex black- and red-pigmented geometric pattern of zigzag and linear motifs around the exterior walls, handles, and interior rim, and an "X" makers mark on the base. The vessel is defined by a flat base, a rotund body with a sloping shoulder, a squat neck with a flared rim, and a pair of applied strap handles boasting segmented patterns. This piece is from the very early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River Basin spanning from modern day Gansu Province in northwest China to Henan Province in central China. Size: 5.625" W handlespan x 3.5" H (14.3 cm x 8.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York
