Description
Dharmapala Eunuch Mahakala Mahapandaka Thangka, Eastern Tibet, late 18th or early 19th century, gouache on cotton, 28.5 x 21 inches, in a cherry wood frame 37 x 27 inches, central figure of the uncommon so-called Black Eunuch or Genderless Mahakala, a wrathful protector wearing tiger skins, human skulls, flowers and a five skull tiara, three bulging eyes, surrounded by numerous dancing wrathful figures and Buddha Samantabhadra with consort flanked by Vajrasattva and Maitreya at the upper center, each figure with an inscription in gold beneath, a beautiful example of using a dark background and shimmering colors to create a three dimensional effect.
