Lot Note: Van Gogh is known to have made a number of variations of this subject. We have sold several distinctly different variations over the years, each having both subtle and significant differences from the final drawing. The present example retains many characteristics of the final (finished) drawing, while exhibiting numerous compositional differences.

Provenance: Property of a prominent Eastern Canadian collector, celebrated author and educator. Formerly part of an important Dutch/American collection (Beverly Hills, California).
