Item Details
Description
Detailed and scarce large format 1864 and 1866 maps of New York City and Vicinity by Matthew Dripps, both appearing in Valentine's Manual. The 1864 map covers the entire island of Manhattan as well as parts of Brooklyn, Queens, Hoboken and Jersey City. Shows all streets and individual buildings. Names and tracts of Manhattan's original landowners’ names are superimposed over the grid. In Queens, Dripps labels Hunters Point and shows the beginnings of the Long Island Railroad. Astoria is well delineated. Central Park is mapped in detail showing the fully glory of Olmstead's plan. An inset on the left side depicts "New York - North of One Hundred & Thirty First." The map owes its wonderfully graphic quality to its vertical orientation, precise grid and finely shaded sections of the city. By 1864 the Five Points had devolved into the world's most notoriously dangers slum (see Martin Scorcese’s Gangs of New York). Further north the genius of Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux created Central Park, the world's first and possibly finest planned public recreation area. Across the East River, Brooklyn, Greenpoint, and Williamsburg consolidated into a single city, thus becoming the third largest city in the United States. Matthew Dripps prepared this map for the 1864 issue of Valentine's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York. The 1866 map is adhered to the reverse side of the 1864 map. It has a similar layout but is updated to 1866. Whether or not these two maps can be safely separated is a matter for a conservator to decide, thus a conservative reserve price has been set for the pair. 1864 MAP – Three small dates in ink. Tiny bit of lower left corner missing. 2” and two 1” edge tears plus few very short tears. Small bit of dried glue at top left, just next to title. Few short edge chips. Trimmed close to frame on three sides. Small bit of foxing at lower left near corner. 18.5 x 25.5. 1866 MAP – Small number in ink. ¾” paper strip adhered to left side outside of map but touching frame. 2” tear repaired with tape from reverse side. Two 1” edge tears and a few very small tears and chips. Small bit of foxing near upper right.17.5 x 25.5
