Description
This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on board. Done in the wildly colorful, Fauvist style of Louis Valtat (French, 1869-1952). Image displays a conscious understanding of light and form as it falls upon a vase of languorous poppies. Hand-painted inscription at lower right corner reads, "L. Valtat". A fine complement to any collector's gallery. Overall measures approximately 12.25" x 15".
Louis Valtat (French, 1869-1952) was born in Dieppe, Normandy. He received an academic training in the arts, with early specialization in landscape painting. He was later influenced by luminaries like Paul Gauguin (French, 1848-1903), the masters of Impressionism, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901). Today, Valtat is noted as a key figure in the stylistic transition in painting from Monet to Matisse.
