There is a distinct influence of Wifredo Lam’s work in Portocarrero’s paintings. Born on February 24, 1912 in Havana, Cuba, Rene Portocarrero was largely self-taught. Portocarrero's first recorded exhibition was in the early 1930s. Throughout his long career, he produced many works in a plethora of mediums, including sculpture, book illustration, and ceramics. His work earned him a prize at the 1963 São Paulo Biennial. Rene Portocarrero died on April 7, 1985 in Havana, Cuba.
