Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an exquisitely framed oil painting on board, rendered in the rich Tonalist style of Granville Redmond (American, 1871-1935). A hand-painted inscription at lower left reads, "Granville Redmond". This dynamic landscape painting depicts towering pines rooted at the edge of a silvery pond. Unified colors and textural brushwork amplifies the brand of California Impressionism for which Redmond is so well known. This handsome painting would be a highlight to any art collection. Overall framed measurements approximately 20" x 14", with an approximate image sight of 15.5" x 11.5".

This charming canvas features an aged paper label on its reverse side, as well as a handwritten inscription on the simple wooden frame ("canvas re-stretched"). The square cardboard label provides the name and information of the Frank Perls Gallery, Beverly Hills, California.

Granville Redmond (American, 1871-1935) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Upon suffering a bout of scarlet fever as a young child, Redmond lost his hearing. He was eventually sent to the California School for the Deaf, where his artistic aptitude was recognized and fostered. Redmond would eventually settle in Los Angeles, California. Here, he married, worked as a painter, and developed a unique bond with Charles Chaplin (American, 1889-1977). By the turn of the 20th century, Redmond received widespread acclaim as a bold colorist and one of America's leading landscape painters.
