Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on board, done in the Synthetic (post-Impressionist) style of Charles Laval (French, 1862-1894). A handwritten inscription at lower left reads, "Charles Laval 1889". This warm image depicts two humble women in the outdoors. One is seated and one stands with a basket balanced on her head. A striking and rich composition, this piece would be a fine highlight to any collection. Framed measurements approximately 21.75" x 17.5". Image sight approximately 13.75" x 9.75".
Charles Laval (French, 1862-1894) was a friend and contemporary of painters such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. Laval sought exoticism in art, and spent a great deal of time in various regions of Central America and the West Indies. Laval's sense of color, the vibrancy and tenderness of his work, and the lasting contributions he made to the art world have given him an eternal place in the world of art.
