Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a recumbent tiger with all four legs tucked beneath the powerful body. The top of the body features an ovoid kneeling pad for the user, and painted streaks of yellow and black pigment create the tiger's characteristic striped appearance. The ovoid head boasts incised circular eyes beneath thin brows, a narrow nose, petaloid ears, and gnashing teeth, and a serrated circular iron grating tool projects out from the front. Size: 25.25" L x 5" W x 9" H (64.1 cm x 12.7 cm x 22.9 cm)

Condition
Minor abrasions and nicks to legs, body, and head, slight bending to iron grating tool, with fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some incised details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits as well as fabulous patina throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
