Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 13th century CE. A pretty ceramic bowl glazed for domestic use; it has a decorated interior with thin bands of wavy decoration and a clover leaf inside a sun motif in tondo. Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware like this based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals. They used the technique called sgraffito, with the design incised through a white slip coating to reveal the red clay body beneath. These bowls were made and exported throughout the Empire, and have been found in numerous shipwrecks, notably in the Aegean Sea. Light wear on surface commensurate with age including some tiny losses from the glazed surface. Otherwise in excellent condition with deposits, mainly on the exterior and rim, indicative of burial at sea.
