Henry St John Bolingbroke was an 18th-century English politician who was a notable proponent of the Jacobite Rebellion and the overthrow of King George I. Bolingbroke was heavily influenced in his writing by Edward Hyde of Clarendon, who had notably published an important work, ‘History of the Civil Wars in England’. This book prompted Bolingbroke to write his ‘Letters on the Study and Use of History’ – a collection of letters which, according to Hicks,

“have commonly been represented as a treatise on the philosophy of history intended for every man of every age.”



Bolingbroke wisely references the historical works of Livy and his history of Rome, Seneca’s influence on philosophers, as well as Plutarch’s ‘Lives’, and Garcilaso de la Vega’s influence on Renaissance Spanish poets.
