Description
1626 VENICE Italy Gasparo Contarini De Magistratibus Venetian Politics Elzevier
Gasparo Contarini was a 16th-century Italian bishop who was an important catalyst in communication lines between Catholics and Protestants following the Protestant Reformation. While not a proclaimed Catholic, Contarini was placed in the position as Cardinal by Pope Paul III much in part because of his political influence. As a result of his position, he wrote ‘De Magistratibus’.
‘De magistratibus et republica venetorum’ was written as a way of clarifying and describing Venice’s system of government. Scholars agree that Contarini wrote this work for foreign dignitaries with hopes of building the mystique and exclusivity of Venetian politics.
This 1626 Elzevier first edition, entitled ‘Veneti de Republica Venetorum’, was published in Leiden, taken from the original from 1543. It also includes commentary and synopses from Leandri Alberti, Johannes Cotovico, and Guilio Belli.
