East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. last quarter of the 19th century. A framed erotic ink and watercolor composition on silk fabric. The artist has provided a bird's eye view of this couple seated before a desk and reading a book together. Just what they are learning is up for discussion; however, the pair of white rabbits (known for their penchant to procreate) on the floor to the right suggests that they may be studying erotic material in order to better understand the pleasures of the flesh. In the background is a doorway to a balcony with a view of a bamboo garden; behind the desk are shelves stocked with an extensive library of books and scrolls. All is hand drawn with ink and skillfully painted in watercolor. A lovely painting set in a triple mat (gold, cornflower blue, and off-white linen) under glass in a gold-hued wooden frame.
