"Pursuant to instructions from Head Quarters...All the available men of Lieut. Bodamer's troop (A) Cavalry Recruits will start at once to join him on the Saline. The men will be properly armed, mounted, and equipped, and carry 10 pounds of ammunition." The Saline was a hotspot in the Indian Wars having been the site of The Battle of the Saline River in August 1867, one of the first recorded combats of the Buffalo Soldiers of the U.S. 10th Cavalry. Donald McIntosh was an officer in the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment who was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn in the Montana Territory. He died in the valley while getting his company out after Reno's attack on the village while they were retreating.
