Szold Henrietta
Szold pens in Hebrew, "Chatimah Tovah" (May your final sealing [in the Book of Life] be good) within the text of a TLS in English written to Judge Mayer Sulzberger.

Typed Letter Signed “Henrietta Szold,” one page, 6” x 9.5”. New York, September 28, 1906. To Hon. Mayer Sulzberger, Philadelphia, beginning “Dear Judge Sulzberger.” Letterhead of “The Jewish Publication Society of America / 608 Chestnut Street / Philadelphia” with “#528 West 123rd St., / New York” typed in. Fine condition.

“Enclosed is a list of the gentlemen to whom a copy of the "Perez volume" has been sent, together with a personal letter urging it upon their attention. Mr. Hawthorne, as you see, is not among them, but a copy of the book and a letter will be sent to him forthwith. Mr. [Israel] Zangwill has been sent a copy of Professor Wiener's book. Wishing you Chatimah Tovah I am, Very truly yours.” Szold has hand printed in Hebrew the words “Chatimah Tovah,” a greeting used between Rosh Hashonah (September 20, 1906) and Yom Kippur (September 29, 1906) meaning “May your final sealing (in the Book of Life) be good.”

On the accompanying sheet of identical “Jewish Publication...” stationery, Szold has listed 12 names including William Dean Howells, Henry James, Rev. Dr. Lyman Abbott, and Edwin Markham. Mayer Sulzberger (1843-1923) was Chairman of the Publication Committee of the Jewish Publication Society of America. He was a Judge of Common Pleas Court from 1895-1902 when he was elevated to President Judge of Common Pleas Court, serving until 1915 when, at age 72, he retired voluntarily. Judge Sulzberger's obituary in “The New York Times” noted that he “had a national reputation as a Jewish scholar and was the possessor of one of the finest private libraries in America.” The “Perez volume" mentioned is “Stories and Pictures” by Isaac Loeb Perez, a book of Eastern European Yiddish tales published by "The Jewish Publication Society of America" in Philadelphia in 1906.

To Louis Edward Levy, Jewish Branch of the "National Liberal Immigration League", Philadelphia, asking him to fill out an enclosed form revising the 5661 (1900-1901) entry of his organization (original form not present; photocopy of the form included) for inclusion in the 5668 (1907-1908) edition.
