1846 Life of Captain John Smith Indians Americana Jamestown Plymouth Simms
‘Life of Captain John Smith’ is the biographical history of John Smith written by William Gilmore Simms. Captain John Smith, leader of the Jamestown Settlement, met with Indian chief Powhatan to negotiate the purchase of foodstuffs and furs from the Indians ultimately saving the Plymouth Colony from both starvation and destruction by the Indians. Smith quickly became proficient at the local Indian dialects, enhancing his negotiate with the tribes and establishing himself, in the minds of the Native Americans, as the leader of the white settlement. As the leader of the Jamestown settlement, he charted the coast and wrote the first American book, ‘A True Relation,’ which effectively publicized English colonization of the New World.
