Description
This lovely lady is a Saroff Character Doll, made in the 1930s. She has lost the label on the bottom of her base – so her identity is a mystery. She has a papier mache head with hand painted features, and a cloth body. She is permanently affixed to her wooden base. There is something written on the bottom but I can’t make it out – perhaps the artist’s signature? The style of her taffeta and brocade lace-trimmed gown indicates that she is meant to represent someone from the 19th century. Her clothing is not removable. She reminds me of Meg from Little Women – beautiful and demure, with a calm presence. A great addition to a collection of vintage artist dolls!
Condition
She has a small surface crack to one side of her forehead. Her outfit has light overall soil, and is a little faded in the front. The foil is peeling off the base.
