Description
Betty Curtis was a lifelong resident of Maine and an early member of NIADA (the National Institute of American Doll Artists.) Her unique character dolls were inspired by 19th century photographs and tintypes of country people. This lady has a head made of boiled tissue paper, covered with stockinette fabric and painted, with inset glass eyes. Her gray mohair wig is styled in a bun. The details on this doll are amazing, from her handmade wire frame glasses, to her many layers of clothing to her mohair eyebrows. She is not tagged, so was probably made before Betty was inducted into NIADA in 1968. The doll has a wire armature so she can sit or stand, and her individual fingers can be posed to hold objects. A wonderful doll depicting a way of life gone by!
