Description
Abraham Lincoln Visits General McClellan on Antietam Battlefield An albumen photograph taken by Alexander Gardner on October 3, 1862 showing President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) visiting General George McClellan (1826-1885) and other Union officers following the Battle of Antietam, the eighth costliest battle of the Civil War. Lincoln visited the battlefield two weeks after the September 17, 1862 battle to review troops as well as to inquire why McClellan did not pursue General Lee\'s retreating Army of Northern Virginia. Lincoln relieved McClellan of his command of the Army of the Potomac the following month. The photograph measures 9.125\" x 7.125\" and is displayed at the center of an original mount measuring 10.875\" x 13.875\". The photograph surface is nearly untouched. The mount is discolored in some areas, and has a tear along the upper edge, else good. A similar photograph was offered at Swann Auction Galleries (New York, New York) with an estimate range of $5,000-7,000, though this print was smaller and of less desirable quality. The photograph shows President Lincoln, a commanding figure in black suit and stovepipe hat at center, in front of Major General Fitz John Porter\'s headquarters facing McClellan at right. McClellan\'s angled kepi hat and slightly thrust out booted left leg suggest an air of defiance and bellicosity. Other notable figures appearing in the photograph include Major General Fitz John Porter (1822-1901) to Lincoln\'s left, and Captain George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) standing near the open tent flap. Alexander Gardner (1821-1882), a Scottish photographer who was employed at the photo study of Mathew Brady, took many other photographs of the Battle of Antietam. These photos documented the unburied dead of both sides; burial parties and graveyards; signal stations and field hospitals; and nearby landmarks such as farms, churches, and bridges.
