Description
Oil on canvas 27 x 20 in., 31 x 24 in. (framed). Portrait of a young boy. Newport, Rhode Island stamp on the black. Artist, illustrator, and muralist, John Elliott was born in Lincolnshire, England and studied in Paris at the Academie Julian under Carolus-Duran. In 1878, he went to Rome to study and there met his future wife, Maud Howe, the daughter of Julia Ward Howe, the author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. An excellent record of his life is the book about him his wife wrote titled: John Elliott: the Story of an Artist. When the couple married in 1887, they spent their first summer in Cornish, New Hampshire where they rented the home of Henry and Edith Prellwitz, and circulated in Cornish society. Their closest friends were Herbert Adams and his wife. In 1904, they bought 20 acres of land in Plainfield, and named the place "Farthest North." Maud Howe Elliott became a Pulitzer-Prize winning author for the biography of her mother and was active in public causes. In 1901, Elliott completed a mural commission to paint a fifty square-foot ceiling of the Boston Public Library. He also worked in oil, pastel, silverpoints, and did miniatures on ivory, but his greatest achievements were his large- scale murals. He did a twenty-five foot long and eleven foot high mural, Diana of the Tides, now at the Smithsonian Paleontology Hall, and a large allegorical painting for the home of Potter Palmer in Chicago. He also painted several portraits of his mother-in-law.John and Maud Elliott were founders of the Newport, Rhode Island Art Association, spending much time in that location where her mother had a home.
