Description
Elijah Baxter (1849 – 1939). Storm Sketch of “The Rocks, Newport, Rhode Island" circa 1910. Oil on Canvas, SLL. Inscribed with title and initialed on canvas, verso. Dimensions: 10” x 14”; Frame size 16” x 20”. William Vareika Fine Arts, Newport, RI, label verso. Elijah Baxter was a charming conversationalist as well as gifted artist. He traveled in all of the wealthy circles of Rhode Island. First coming to the attention of the Sprague family, who paid for the young artist’s art education abroad, he then followed the art patronage to Newport. Baxter was one of the founding members of the Newport Art Association. The wealthy financier, Henry Clewes, housed him in his Newport Mansion and it is in Newport that the artist would become very admired for his seascapes by collectors and art critics. In a 1908 Providence Journal article on "NEWPORT AS A MECCA FOR ARTISTS", Baxter was praised, "Elijah Baxter has painted several virile marines, strongly suggestive of Winslow Homer’s coast scenes, which have been exhibited at the School of Design and in New York galleries".
