ca 1860-1880. A Vernoer surveyor's compass by W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, New York, of lacquered brass and silvered 5.75" diameter dial, fleur-de-lis at North; East and West points reversed, blued steel needle with brass hub clamp, needle ring divided 0-90 degrees with individual degree divisions extending to inner rim, shaped limb with Vernier, tangent screw, clamp and outkeeper at South, two leveling vials at North and South, baluster-form mount and ball-and-socket tripod adapter, twin screw-on-sights, stamped "W.&L.E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y., in a fitted dovetailed mahogany case with maker's label on the lid, 16" long and 6.25" across. Includes tripod, plumb bobs, transit with compass base and telescope top with water balance and instruction manual; and painted stadia rod.
