Description
LARGE AND WELL-PRESERVED WOOD BOWL COMPASS America, Circa 1840 Signed on the 6-inch engraved paper compass card "John J. Murray, 23 South Street New York.". Agate pivot and brass cap. Compass rose divided into eight primary points, with a fancy fleur-de-lis at the north point and the other cardinal points marked and subdivided to 1/32nd points. Housed within a wooden bowl, turned from a single piece of yellow pine that retains its original green paint. Compass hung on its original sheet brass gimbals which allows the compass to be removed from the box. The box itself is nicely constructed of hand dovetailed pine in original finish with a sliding oak lid. Bowl diameter 8". Provenance The West Sea Company, Old Town, San Diego, California, June 2002.
