Description
Large - African Carved Mask from Bobo Tribe in Republic of Upper Volta (now called Burkina Faso as of 1984) Mask was acquired by current owner in 1980's in NYC. Original tag on mask shows a price of $800.
Appears to be a mix of animals, possibly toucan and buffalo. The Bobo people make lots of animal masks. At the end of the dry season and before the work of cultivation begins, purification ceremonies take place, using masks which may represent protective spirits such as a warthog, buffalo with horns, rooster, toucan, fish, antelope, serpent or hawk.
Measures: 35 H x 15 W x 9 D - 7.5 in at thickest
