La famille de Madilla déménagea à Ancaster (Ont.), à la fin du 18e siècle et on sait que Sexton s’installa dans la même région en 1830. Il exploitait une ferme et gagnait sa vie comme peintre itinérant. Signature « E.S Painter » au dos du tableau, ainsi que le nom du modèle.
