Oil on canvas 18 x 14 in. From robertcorless.com: Robert Corless was born in The Bronx, New York on June 6, 1939. Largely self-taught as an artist, he moved to lower Manhattan in 1961. There his artwork gained the immediate attention of his peers, critics, curators and gallery visitors. He served as a studio assistant to sculptors Herbert Ferber and Robert Mallary and was friends with leading cultural figures of the period like Franz Kline, Frank O'Hara, and Henry Geldzahler. Through the upheavals in the New York art world of the 1960s and 1970s, Corless' visionary art defied category or school, as his creations embraced and recombined elements of classicism, portraiture, color field painting, figuration, abstraction, and surrealism.
